3.1 Hot foil stamping

Hot foil stamping, invented around 1440, is a printing technique that allows to add a luxurious touch to your packaging design. Most of the time, this printing technique is reserved for premium prints such as high-end luxurious boxes or delicate paper pouches. The shiny effect that is created by hot foil stamping looks like gold, which was originally used in traditional hot foil stamping. Nowadays, this shiny effect can be reproduced in many colors, we propose hot foil stamping in the following colors:

  • Gold
  • Black
  • White
  • Silver
  • Copper

Some products are also available for foil stamping in other colors, such as the Wonderbox, which is customizable with a blue, orange, red, or green stamp. Something very unique to hot foil printing is the tactile appeal. Indeed, this technique adds some relief to the packaging, adding value to the sensorial marketing put into place. Sensorial marketing is difficult to achieve, especially trough packaging. Traditional packaging adds to the sensorial experience by playing both on the visual and tactile side. Customizable packaging allows us to surprise its targets. Indeed, customers are used to traditional plain packaging, so if you surprise them with a visually appealing packaging, they’ll appreciate it. Adding the relief will surprise them, even more, when they touch the logo.

Hot foil stamping is available on many different products we propose such as most of the magnetic cardboard boxes. It is also made available on the Noblesse kraft paper bag and the Noblesse kraft paper pouch. However, the main limitation of hot foil stamping is that it is only usable in 1 color at a time. This is not a big issue, the quality of the impression makes it unnecessary to use multiple colors at a time. This printing technique is used preferably for the impression of logos or texts in one color with a shiny effect in gold, silver, copper, …

3.2 Digital printing

Digital printing 3, invented in 1991, is one of the most easily accessible printing techniques. Its the easiness of use allows it to be applied at very small quantities. It always has the possibility to use 4 colors, and create hereby any custom color if needed. These small quantities are made in a short delay, allowing us to make printed packaging solutions in a short time. All colors are painted in a single pass, which enables our customers to reduce the price and time. One of the main advantages of digital printing is that it allows you to fine-tune your packaging. The fine-tuning of packaging allows you to observe the different packaging designs you introduce and conclude which work best. Digital printing also allows companies to more easily and cost-efficiently propose seasonal packaging to their customers. It is important to notice that digital printing could be seen as a one-size-fits-all. However, this solution needs to be studied closely, as other printing techniques might suit your needs even more. This technique is particularly suited for artwork like photos or more complex pictures, however, it will be less precise for logos and small texts.

3.3 Offset printing

Offset printing, invented in 18754 , is an ancient method of printing that has been updated to be more efficient. Offset printing is best suited traditionally for producing larger quantities in an economical way. These larger quantities also require little maintenance and are of really high quality. Offset printing offers different advantages compared to other methods. Some of the most important advantages5 are:

  • Consistent high quality of image
  • Quick and easy production of printing plates
  • Appropriate for small production runs

What is important to notice, is that the ink isn’t transferred directly on the paper. The paper that is used has to be adapted for offset printing. The plates required for offset printing are easy to produce, making them inexpensive. This helps to get customized commercial packaging delivered at an economical expense. The possibility to print on silk paper shows that offset printing is particularly suited for packaging that may be flexible. The high quality of the printing done by offset printing allows for printing of outstanding quality. Indeed, small letters and a fine line can be printed without any problem.

3.4 Screen printing

This technique is predominantly used when the volumes are relatively small and high quality in the details of the packaging design is required. Andy Warhol was a fervent user of screen printing. This technique offers a great holding for the colors, nonetheless, it is only usable with a limited number of colors. The inks that are used are mat, as opposed to hot foil stamping. We will prefer to use these techniques for printing of a logo in 1 or 2 colors.

The main advantages of screen printing are:

  • Offers the possibility to print great areas
  • Makes it possible to print a lot of products quickly
  • Great adhesion of the color
  • Makes it possible to print a lot of logos with only minimal deformations

Centuryprint offers different ways of customizing through screen printing. As a matter of fact, it is possible for us to customize your packaging on one side or 2 sides. Each of these options is also available in 1 or 2 colors.

It is a relatively old printing technique, but it has been updated several times to align with the most modern adaptations. In this way, it stays one of the most reliable ways to produce large orders of customized packaging solutions. Furthermore, it is interesting to notice that this type of printing is adaptable to numerous materials. This is translated by the fact that we propose flexography printing for only 3 products:
